Who Is Seema Verma???
On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced his nomination of health policy consultant Seema Verma to lead the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service (CMS).
“I am honored to be nominated by President-elect Trump today,” said Ms. Verma. “I look forward to helping him tackle our nation’s daunting healthcare problems in a responsible and sustainable way.”
As founder and CEO of her consulting firm, SVC, Inc., Ms. Verma is primarily known for her work on Medicaid reform programs. According to her SVC bio, Ms. Verma has designed or supported Medicaid reform efforts in Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, and Maine. Significantly, Ms. Verma designed former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ Medicaid expansion model, Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), and advised Vice President-elect Gov. Mike Pence on obtaining approval for the newest version, known as HIP 2.0.
In an August 2016 Health Affairs blog post she co-wrote, Ms. Verma stated: “Taken together, HIP’s series of incentives and consequences engage members in their health care decisions, encourage continuous enrollment, and support transition to commercial health insurance.”
Before entering the consulting field, she worked as Vice President of Planning at the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County, Indiana and as a Director at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials in Washington D.C. She earned a master’s in public health at Johns Hopkins University.
Although Dr. Tom Price has been selected as the chief officer of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Ms. Verma will have practical influence over hospitals and health systems through regulatory interpretation and policy development.
A majority vote from the Senate is required for the nominees to secure their new positions.
