Michael Buchanio, J.D., is a Senior Consultant with Murer Consultants, Inc. Michael received his Juris Doctor degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law with a focus in Intellectual Property. Prior to attending law school, he received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nebraska.
Since joining Murer, one of Michael’s primary practice areas is the 340B Drug Pricing Program, which offers significantly reduced pharmaceuticals to safety net hospitals. He works with new and existing 340B providers to assess program compliance, as well as identifying areas for program improvement and growth. Moreover, Michael helps organizations to identify business opportunities relative to the program including the assessment and implementation of contract pharmacy networks and the reduction in drug spending. As drug costs management and control continues to be an important component of providers’ healthcare continuum, Michael continues to discuss the importance of hospital-owned pharmacies and retail pharmacy development.
More recently, Michael guides health care providers through various transactional matters, including mergers, acquisitions, changes-of-ownership, and corporate restructuring initiatives. Michael assists health care providers with ensuring continuation of Medicare certification and state licensure in relation to business transactions; as well as obtaining initial Medicare certification and state licensure for newly developed providers.
Prior to joining Murer Consultants, Michael worked at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in their Intellectual Property litigation department. His experience focused on pharmaceutical patents, medical device and equipment patents, and trademarks. Before entering the legal field, Michael worked at Goldman Sachs in New York as a Consultant and at URS Corporation as a Project Engineer providing Regulatory Audit, Risk, and Compliance services.
